New circumstances call for new approaches. When it comes to jobs, employment and entrepreneurship, what worked in the past will not necessarily work in the present and future. Certainly, much of that will definitely not.

Some overall trends are quite obvious: The "virtual" (online/digital) world will become increasingly important. Online jobs are safer than those that require in-person contact—safer both in terms of health and job security. But the challenge, from a practical point of view, is in the details. If you decide to explore this direction, what types of online opportunities are best for you to pursue?

The strategy that is best for you will depend on your circumstances. If you have the luxury of retraining yourself, to best adapt to the post-coronavirus world, you will explore your options and invest in your future this way. If you do not have this luxury, you will be obliged to search for opportunities that generate immediate income. Currently there is a tremendous demand for individuals who can provide restocking and delivery services, for example. Amazon and Walmart, for example, are said to be hiring with very little employee screening. Apply, show up and start working.

The advantage to that category of job opportunity is that you can start getting a paycheck almost immediately. This does not come without disadvantages, however. Being in physical proximity with others puts you potentially at risk in terms of exposure to COVID-19. You may not be retained long-term, when the pandemic subsides. You will not be using your time and energy to reposition yourself for higher-level work with a better future.

Even if you do not have the luxury of investing in a full-time educational/retraining program—regardless of your circumstances—there are adjustments you can make. You could enroll in a flexible online program, for example, that allows you to complete the requirements at your own pace and at times that are convenient for you. And maybe—with a bit of additional effort—you could find work that is done online. There are in fact many such opportunities for those willing to seek them out and present themselves in a way that appeals to prospective employers. The extent to which you survive and thrive now and and in the future will depend to a large extent on how intelligently you formulate your strategy.
